Famous for its lush forests, it’s no surprise that Washington State has incredible treehouses.

It’s one thing to walk in the woods and become gripped by the majesty of trees, the organisms upon which all others depend. It’s quite another to enmesh oneself in a tree and live amidst its branches.

As every child knows, a treehouse is a wonderful thing. Visiting one opens up a new world of adventure and instills a sense of wonder. Adults are not immune to this magic, though many do not realize this fact. A getaway in a treehouse, even if just for a night or two, is an unforgettable experience.

Washington State is the perfect place to (re)discover your love of treehouses. It has trees aplenty as well as beautiful lakes, magnificent mountains, a host of alluring islands, and is home to three national parks (Mount Rainier, Olympic, and North Cascades). A treehouse stay is an excellent stop on any road trip. Or it can be the focal point of a destination vacation. Opportunities abound.

Treehouses are a unique kind of accommodation and offer rich rewards to those willing to take a chance and try something different. To reach the living space, some treehouses require climbing, navigating tight spaces, and grappling with heights. Others can be accessed just by walking up a set of stairs. Consider your needs while looking over the options and chances are you’ll find something right for you.

We scoured Airbnb and Vrbo to compile this list of these unforgettable Washington vacation rentals in the trees. Many parts of the state are represented and the possibilities are endless. Read on and discover the best treehouse rental of your childhood dreams.

If you’re a fan of the treehouse trend, you’ve surely heard of Pete Nelson, author and builder of incredible sylvan homes. This treehouse is one of his masterworks. The building sits on a large property a ways behind the owners’ house. Access comes via a 55-foot suspended walkway. Cross it and you will find a luxurious romantic getaway built around a massive tree. Astounding features include a home cinema with a 100-inch screen, WiFi, an outdoor shower, and a private hot tub. Enjoy a Keurig coffee in the morning as you await the daily continental breakfast, delivered via zipline from the main home. The home has a comfortable queen bed and a bunk bed in the loft.

Just yards from Lummi Bay, this oceanfront modern treehouse  is another Washington gem. It is on the Lummi Indian Reservation near the northern edge of the United States, overlooking the San Juan Islands. Stare out from the deck at a number of mountainous islands, including Canada’s Vancouver Island. The 15-minute ferry to the sparsely populated Lummi Island is a must-do activity. Fit for four guests keen on birdwatching and canoeing, the home has a queen bed and a pullout. Heated floors will stave off the winter cold, as will the Finnish barrel sauna which sits on the dock looking out at the ocean and surrounding mountains.

Rain or shine, from sunrise to sunset, Lake Chelan is something beautiful to behold. Surrounded by the Cascades and nourished by their watery runoff, it is an idyllic sight. All the more so when gazed from the comfort of home. This beautiful Washington treehouse  offers visitors a unique glamping experience. It sits atop stilts, enmeshed in foliage on a hillside at the water’s edge. The building is a comfortable cabin with rough wooden walls and an impressive wrap-around deck over the water. With two queen bedrooms and a full kitchen, it’s great for a pair of couples. 100 yards from the local beach and 20 minutes from wineries, a water park, and more, you won’t have any problem filling your days with fun.

This two-story treehouse in Snohomish County is a fine construction and an excellent hideaway up in the clouds, surrounded by panoramic views of towering Douglas fir trees. It has several amenities that your childhood tree fort surely lacked. These include a large soaking tub, stone fireplace, and HD TV. The building sits on a steep hillside, running parallel to the trees. The first floor has a queen bed fitted with a memory foam mattress. The second floor has a loft area suitable for one young child, so the house is great for couples, plus their young ones, for a memorable weekend getaway.

Enjoy life on the edge in this treehouse near the northwestern tip of the continental United States. Just steps from the water, the home overlooks the Strait of Juan de Fuca, across which Vancouver Island can be glimpsed on a clear day. The home rests 20 feet above the earth, supported by several small trees. It consists of two units; this one is perfect for a couple but has a twin bed and kitchenette and therefore fits a party of three. A shared fire pit is available for guests to enjoy next to the water. The small city of Port Angeles is a short drive away.

Though not actually built around a tree, this four-story luxury treehouse  near Lake Wenatchee has the feel of a genuine treehouse. It is, after all, high up off the ground and surrounded by treetops. Look out any window in the top floor living room and find yourself in the canopy. Venture out onto the deck and take in the sights and sounds of life high above the forest floor. The lake is just a few minutes away. Epic powder is to be found at Steven’s Pass , a ski resort 29 miles distant. Great for families, the home has a queen bedroom, a double, and a room with two twin beds. It is accessed from the top floor by way of a long staircase, so guests with mobility issues might have a hard time.

Please note, this treehouse does not have air-conditioning, but provides fans for guest comfort.

A unique stay in a unique location, this delightful home is a fantastic way to enjoy the Pacific Northwest. It’s on the western coast of Vashon, an island west of Seattle in Puget Sound. Enjoy the scenic beach and try your hand at crabbing or kayaking with a complimentary equipment (please alert the host in advance). The property has a small dock, a beachside cabana, and a paddle for guests to use. The house itself has two structures, a bathhouse and a two-story construction with a living area and sleeping areas above. Explore the island or take the ferry (the stop is just minutes away) to Seattle.

This 20-acre property on the Yakima River has a lot going for it. The river itself is a big draw for anyone who loves to fly fish, but whatever their hobbies, everyone can appreciate the property’s lovely tree house. It usually takes quite a verbal tangle to decide who gets to sleep in the tree house (which has a queen and a sofa bed) and who will sleep in the main building (which has another queen and a trundle in the living room). Whatever your bed assignment, be sure to take advantage of the many opportunities on offer around Cle Elum , the northern Cascade’s hub for outdoor activities.

Surrounded by soaring trees, this Meadowbrook home  offers guests a different kind of stay in Seattle . Though built from the ground up, the home has the distinctive feel of a treehouse. Enter via a bridge connected to the second story, peer out of any window and find yourself immersed in the woods. The top floor consists of the kitchen and cozy living area, while the queen bedroom and onyx-walled bathroom can be found below. The home is 10 miles from downtown and just minutes from Lake Washington.
